Medical cannabis possesses a plethora of chemical compounds proven to treat seizures. Cannabidiol oil or CBD oil, which contains no THC (the property of cannabis that gets users “high”), is a nonpsychoactive byproduct of the cannabis plant that has recently been legalized for sale at a federal level, in every state. CBD oil is also known to treat seizures and epileptic conditions. Here’s how:
All forms of cannabis have anticonvulsant traits. In fact, a majority of these anticonvulsants are found in the plant’s cannabidiol. Cannabidiol targets parts of the brain that are directly related to seizures: calcium ion channels, glutamate receptor antagonists, sodium ion channels, and the GATA system and receptor agonists. Anticonvulsants treat the neurotransmitters responsible for attaching themselves to the neurons. This alters the activity of cells, switching the flow of ions in and out of the neurons.
CBD oil is easier to obtain, refill and administer than traditional epileptic treatment options. Most sufferers of seizures are prescribed a whole pharmaceutical cocktail, including valproic acid, phenytoin, primidone, clonazepam, phenobarbital, and ethosuximide. These medicines are largely considered ineffective or so riddled with side-effects it often isn’t worth it for patients to consume them. Along with sky-rocketing prices for prescription medicine, conventional treatment is all but a failure.
According to the Texas Medical Center, CBD oil has the potential to help victims of seizures reclaim their lives. Trysten Pearson, a resident of Galveston Texas, has suffered from seizures since 2013. Despite countless prescription treatments, and even an electronic device implanted in his chest which sends jolts to his brain in attempts to prevent epileptic episodes, Trysten’s symptoms have persisted and their effects have worsened. Since physical activity tends to trigger his seizures, Trysten’s school prohibited him from physical education, causing weight gain. Meanwhile, his grades began to slip due to memory loss induced by his epilepsy. When CBD oil finally became legal in Texas, his life changed for the better. Within the first 30 days of his CBD oil treatment, Trysten had just one seizure. Teachers reported that his attention increased and grades saw a gradual improvement. For Trysten’s family, cannabis was always a last resort effort to find a solution to the epilepsy that plagued their son. After seeing the results of his CBD oil use, the entire family is surprised by how quickly the oil took effect, helping young Trysten to reclaim his memory and start living his life again.
